A preview of Google Instant Previews

Written on November 11, 2010 at 2:17 pm by Tamara

Ever done a search on Google, and spent a while clicking on results – only to be disappointed with them and continually clicking ‘back’?  Well this “pogosticking” within search results may soon be a thing of the past, with the launch of Google Instant Previews.

When searching for something in Google you will now see a little magnifying glass next to each result.  By clicking on this you can see a preview of that site on the right hand side of search results.

Google has gone a few steps further to make things even easier for users by incorporating ‘callouts’ and ‘tears’ within these previews.  ‘Callouts’ are shown as an orange box that is placed around the text on the previewed page that is relevant to your search query.

A ‘tear’ is introduced when Google appears to have torn a page to show you the parts of that preview that are relevant to your search.

The best part is that it doesn’t slow down the display of your search results.  As mentioned on the Official Google Blog, Google Instant Previews promises to “match your query with an index of the entire web, identify relevant parts of each web page, stitch them together and serve the resulting preview completely customised to your search… in under one-tenth  of a second”.

Sounds pretty good to us!  If you can’t seem to see the new feature in Google, head here to test it out for yourself:  http://www.google.com/landing/instantpreviews/
