What is an ‘IP Address’?

Written on July 28, 2014 at 1:50 pm by Tamara

We understand that the world wide web is a big, scary thing for most people, so each month we’ll try to take a word, acronym or phrase and explain to you in simple, ‘non-techie’ terms what it all means. This is DBG’s Digital Definition of the Month!

So what is an IP address?  Well this is what the letters stand for:

Internet Protocol Address

An IP address is a unique string of numbers that is the ‘label’ assigned to a device such as a PC, smartphone or tablet.  Your IP address is actually what allows you to send and receive data across the web!

So what does an IP address look like?  It’s a set of four  numbers ranging from 0-255, each of which has 1-3 digits, with a full stop separating each set of numbers.  Here’s some random examples of IP addresses:

96.201.2.14     150.48.90.211     2.150.58.58

An IP address can be either static, or dynamic.  A static IP address doesn’t change, and can reveal information about the computer, including the city where it is based and the internet service provider that it is using.  Conversely, a dynamic IP address is temporary and a new one is assigned to a particular device each time it accesses the web.
